Minosa Designs are leading bathroom architects and manufacturers of high quality washbasins and bathroom furniture. Their skill has been recognised time and time again, most recently taking out the 2013 and 2014 KBDI Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year awards.

We spoke to Minosa founders, Simona Castagna and Darren Genner, about the secrets of open plan bathrooms, renovating tips for small spaces, and key trends for 2015.

What are lighting must-haves for the bathroom space?

Light in our opinion must be layered and multi-functional. A bathroom is a room where we make up and come down, so the lights should be able to do many things.

What is the best way to plan an open layout bathroom?

Planning and thought is the only way to make these rooms a success. Think about the following questions to map out an action plan.  What are the hours of use? Do you have a conflicting time schedule? Does the space need to close down? Unlike open plan living rooms these types of ensuites, or Parents’ Retreats are only successful when you consider all activities and functions.

What do you predict as a hot bathroom trend for 2015?

Anything natural, marble or wooden is hot at the moment. There is a real sense or need to be connected to nature.

Do you have any renovating tips for the small bathroom renovator?

Small bathrooms are a challenge. The best thing to do is to think about transition - if you can place all fixtures on one wall you can create a feeling of space.

How important is ventilation when designing your bathroom?

Critical. It’s critical that it works and is placed in the right locations

Minosa Design is based in NSW and offers a range of services for the style conscious renovator.
